A judge at Mold Crown Court today jailed Smith, of St David's Road, Llandudno, for a total of seven years and nine months. The court heard one male victim had come forward and when a female victim heard about that they reported Smith too. Another male victim followed suit.
Prosecutor Alexandra Carrier said the girl was abused in north east Wales. Smith got into her bed, kissed her multiple times and touched her intimately. You can sign up for all the latest court stories here
In a statement, read out by Ms Carrier, she said she felt "angry and weak". On the day she told her mum she felt "relief" but also "guilt" that she hadn't reported the abuse sooner. She said she had kept the burden of what happened secret for years and said: "I cried most of the day and night because it was finally out in the open."
The court heard the first male victim was abused in England and North Wales. He was groomed multiple times with gifts of cigarettes and alcohol.
Smith would perform sex acts on him, said the victim, who like the others cannot be named to protect their anonymity. In a statement the boy said he turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with the effects of the abuse.
He got into minor offending but became sober and fit in prison. He suffered from anxiety but it has become "controllable". The second boy abused by Smith said he turned to drugs and was violent even with his family who have thankfully stood by him. The mental effects of the offending were most damaging.
He became depressed and anxious and considered suicide, he added. Simeon Evans, defending, said Smith had suffered abuse himself as a child.
He denied offences against the first boy in 2016 as he was "ashamed and frightened". But in December last year Smith had pleaded guilty to all the offences against all three victims which was "unusual".
Mr Evans said Smith has asked him to say today how sorry he is. The judge His Honour Niclas Parry said: "This case involves the sexual abuse of young children which remarkably spans a total period of 46 years."
There were repeated offences and a significant disparity between his age - starting in his thirties - and the ages of the three victims. Aside from the offences he is a man of good character with a good work ethic, the judge said.
He has experienced trauma himself and has health difficulties. The judge jailed Smith for 12 months, concurrent, for each of two offences against the girl, three years each, concurrent, for seven offences against the first boy, and three years and nine months each, concurrent, for offences against the second boy. This makes a total of seven years and nine months. Smith will be subject to sex offender notification requirements for life.
There is also an indefinite sexual harm prevention order prohibiting Smith from having unsupervised contact with children under 16 or from staying overnight in a property with children unless conditions are met. North Wales Police declined to issue Smith's custody photograph.https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/courts-crime-derek-smith-jailed-30780564
