Snowdonia Monopoly Boards Must Have A Queue to the Summit, Lots of Litter & Human and Dog Waste (reader submission!)
I can't think why Monopoly would want to waste making a game on Eryri (Snowdonia) the mountain is a total embarrassment, but the Daily Post has called for suggestions and it appears that the suggestions coming in are less than flattering!
ALL the squares should be "No Parking"
A queue to the summit, lots of litter and lots of human and dog waste.
Forget the landmarks, I think the playing pieces should be:
- pile of toilet paper
- disposable vape
- plastic bottle
- flat-bed recovery lorry
- bluetooth speaker
- coastguard helicopter
Every second square is 'Go To Jail', the Community Chest is empty, and there's no banker.
The most iconic of all
Flip flop 🩴
I suppose replacing “go to jail” with “go to Rhyl” could be a possibility
Or Wrexham!
And the article....
Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park is to get its own Monopoly game showcasing the region’s landscapes, heritage, and beauty. More than 30 landmarks and buildings will feature in the game – replacing the likes of Mayfair and Park Lane from the classic London Monopoly.
It raises the prospect of players battling it out to buy prime spots such as Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Harlech Castle, and Llyn Tegid. Traditional tokens like the Scottie dog could be swapped for Eryri items like mountain goats, walking boats, and motorhomes.
Chance and Community Chest cards will be customized for Eryri too. Suggested ideas include fining players for wild camping and ticketing them for illegal parking!
North Wales Live readers can help design the Eryri edition by voting for which landmarks, tokens, and penalties should appear on the board. There’s a public poll below and the results will be collated with those from Winning Moves, which makes Monopoly versions under license from Hasbro.
Winning Moves anticipates the Eryri edition will “sell all over the world”. Yasmin East, custom games executive, said: “We expect to be wonderfully spoiled for choices putting this unique and official Monopoly board for Snowdonia together.”
From humble roots in Maryland, USA, Monopoly has gone on to achieve global domination. Seeking to expand the range still further, the game’s makers wanted to focus on Europe’s beauty spots. Twenty locations were shortlisted, including the Alps, Norway’s fjords, and the Black Forest in Germany.
Topping the list was Eryri (Snowdonia). Factors considered by the game’s makers were “outstanding natural beauty”, “stunning landmarks” and “tourist appeal”.
To mark the decision, the game mascot “Mr Monopoly” will today (Thursday, July 20) attempt to climb Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). Starting from the Royal Victoria Hotel, Llanberis, he will be joined by props such as top hats and out-sized Eryri Monopoly money.
You can have your say on what the board looks like. In the poll below, you can choose or nominate Eryri landmarks to feature on the multi-colored squares – just like the classic London game. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is a likely pick for the Mayfair (purple) square – but what other places and attractions should be included on the board? (The poll is split into different categories - you can navigate between these. The list isn't exhaustive - contribute your own ideas and they may feature in the game).
Locations just outside the national park have been included as they often feature in Eryri (Snowdonia) marketing. The company said: “We want to be fluid with Snowdonia’s boundaries as there are so many iconic sites just outside the national park that are magnets for visitors, such as Portmeirion. We will listen to what people have to say and, at this stage, we are not ruling anything out.”
Each Monopoly board has 10 colored sets and in the Eryri edition, these will be themed. The themes have yet to be decided but they could include mountains, lakes, heritage and tourism attractions. Traditional railway squares may be expanded to include all forms of transport.
Results will be shared with Winning Moves, the game’s maker. The data will be used to help finalize the landmarks and attractions that will appear on the Eryri edition board.
Winning Moves said it would be “unthinkable” for Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) not to be included on the Eryri board. “It would be like playing the game without dice,” said a spokesperson.
In the coming days, there will be other ways to influence the final look of the Eryri edition. North Wales Live will shortly be running a second poll to select the tokens.
In this, you can help choose what should take the place of original Monopoly tokens like the top hat and ship. Perhaps a pair of walking boots? A Welsh mountain goat?
At the same time, there will be an opportunity to suggest ideas for customized Chance and Community Chest cards. Perhaps one card could fine players for wild camping without prior permission? The queue for an hour at the summit of Yr Wyddfa? If you want to contribute ideas, keep an eye out for this second poll.
