I always have my mobile turned off! But will this information be used by any other service? Police, Benefit Departments? And will facial recognition cameras be next? Who knows
Today councillors discussed the County Borough Council’s Digital Strategy. The strategy includes using public wifi for footfall monitoring - tracking people’s mobile phones along our high streets so the council can work out which bits are popular, and which bits aren’t.
This system has gone live along Mostyn Street. It doesn’t collect an individual’s personal details but can collect a unique identifier from your phone. Footfall monitoring of this kind is common in other towns, cities and shopping centres.
Personally, I’m very sceptical about collecting information from people’s phones without the user actively choosing to share information. Lots of opinions were put forward today, so let me know what you think.
What's next? Anal probing?
