Colwyn Bay...Grade II Listed Civic Centre sold to owner of The Parc Eirias Hotel Chain!

This is such wonderful news. the council should never have stopped using it, and instead got rid of that awful Coed Pella Office instead

The former Civic Centre in Colwyn Bay has been sold to a hotel owner. Conwy County Borough Council has confirmed that its former Civic Offices next to Parc Eirias have been snapped up.

The council vacated the Grade II Listed site and a number of other locations when staff moved to Coed Pella in the centre of Colwyn Bay in December 2018. Part of the Civic site was sold in August 2021 for housing development.

The Civic building itself was put on the market at the end of 2021 after an earlier sale fell through. But now the local authority has confirmed the building and its curtilage has been sold to Parc Eirias Hotel Ltd.

One of the directors is Ian Robbins who runs the Lawton & Lauriston Court Hotel in Llandudno with his family. That hotel has previously been rated as one of the top places to stay in the UK and Europe by Tripadvisor reviewers.

That site went on the market with Colliers for £2m earlier this year. It is hoped the move to buy the building by Mr Robbins, and fellow director Robert Andrew Roberts could signal the return of a quality hotel in the seaside town that was once a tourism hotspot.

Council leader Cllr Charlie McCoubrey said: “When the sale was discussed earlier this year, councillors were clear that any proposals should enhance the site and be an asset to the regeneration of Colwyn Bay, and they were supportive of this site becoming a hotel. As such, we’re pleased that the buyers know the local market and will bring their experience to this project, we wish them every success and look forward to seeing their proposals come to fruition.”

Savills acted for the Council in the sale of both sites, which was led by Associate, Jay Duffield, in Savills Manchester office.

Mr Duffield said: “We’re very pleased to secure a sale of the Civic Centre on behalf of the Council, which we’re confident will ensure an attractive and sustainable redevelopment of the Grade II listed property.”

The council said proposals put forward for the site by the new owner will be subject to the usual planning process. The property was built in 1909 as a convalescent home and repurposed as the Civic Centre in 1964.

  1. Glad that is has been bought, there were rumours that the council were looking to demolish it! Knowing McCoubrey and his hate for old buildings, this could have happened, just like the Bee Hotel in Abergele.
